I have just this minute put down the last page of Diary of a Country Mother. My word, what can one say? Cynthia Montanaro has given us the story of a splendidly faithful Catholic household....The word contemplative is the key to this amazing memoir, and the quiet pace belongs to its essence. Every chapter (or meditation) entails some concrete, softly-textured, domestic narrative, all bespeaking both Tim's inner man and the household in which the Lord placed him to pass his brief time on this earth. Every episode has its keen point, and the combination of the domestic with the use of hymns, Scripture, the liturgy, Catholic writings, and Cynthia's own reflections, produce the richness the reader will find here. ---- Thomas Howard, Ph.D., Author of Hallowed Be This House; Lead Kindly Light; Chance or the Dance, The Dove Descending

Cynthia Montanaro is an excellent writer and this is a beautiful book. She demonstrates how the liturgical year provides the framework for embracing the joys and difficulties of family. ---- Kimberly Hahn, Co-author with Scott Hahn of Rome Sweet Home; Author of Legacy of Love and Beloved and Blessed

I enjoyed reading the daily reflections in Diary of a Country Mother, and learning of the impact Tim had on the lives of so many people. This memoir beautifully captures the reality that each and every person, regardless of any limitations or ailments, has profound value and can have significant impact on the lives of those around them. --Most Reverend Henry J. Mansell, Archbishop of Hartford, Connecticut

Diary of a Country Mother eBook Cynthia Montanaro

I laughed and cried through this tender book of motherhood and hope. The author shares her grieving heart, yet amazingly finds strength in nature and scriptures to deal with her son's untimely death. Of the many metaphors woven throughout, one is of a tiny purple flower she compares to her son Tim's character: mysterious but delightful. She describes it as a perfect creation! Inspiring me to trust in an eternal plan, this book changed my way of looking at my own children! Captivating narratives and unique country-life experiences in this book reveal the loving spirit of a special child. The touching verses and quotes brought me comfort and peace despite unfortunate tragedy. I would recommend this book because it encourages my heart in challenging situations.

Diary of a Country Mother eBook Cynthia Montanaro Reviews

Cynthia Montanaro has woven together a loving and timeless memoir of faith and family. Like a favorite hand-made quilt, this book has a warming effect that will likely endure within the reader. Cynthia's prose has an extraordinary spiritual depth, yet in the essence of a country mother, is so comforting and inviting, you feel as if there were always a place set for you at the dinner table. It is through her thoughtful words we are introduced to her son Tim, a young man overflowing with energy and love, and a tireless sense of wonder. The way he saw the world as described so lovingly would make anyone smile, and long for those days of perching yourself in a favorite tree, and contemplating all that is within our expanded view.

While reading this book, I felt as if I were praying. I believe that Tim's memory will serve as a reminder of how beautiful yet fragile human life is, and to be mindful of all the gifts we have in the present.
Cynthia is an excellent writer, both in her ability to articulate her thoughts and experiences, as well as the succinct and beautiful language that she chooses for this retrospective diary style of a memoir.

It is a quick read, though not an easy one, as the reader journeys with Cynthia in remembering her son with special needs, Tim, who was a quirky, adventurous, and unpretentious child who died at a young age - suddenly and tragically. Yet Cynthia does not dwell on his death, but rather in her faith that sustains her confidence that Tim has joined the realm of heaven with the angels and saints.

It is a beautiful account of her personal faith journey, as well as the endearing and heartwarming tales of Tim, who never outgrew his childlike innocence, even as a teenager. While richly Catholic in its language and in her understanding, appreciation and love of redemptive suffering, it is universal in the sense that any person - young or old, parent, grandparent or single - can find some relevancy in its pages.

Anyone who has ever experienced loss of a loved one will find renewed strength, fervor and hope in God's merciful and healing love after reading Cynthia's memoir.
Cynthia Montanaro wrote "Diary of a Country Mother A Year Remembering Tim" in order to “reveal that each person, no matter his mental or physical problems, has a great worth beyond measure and leaves an enormous impact on those near to them and on those farther afield.”

She begins the diary December 8, 2005, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, six months after her son Tim died. Tim suffered from Tourette Syndrome and obsessive compulsive tendencies. He died by his own hand at the age of fifteen, but Montanaro does not view it as a suicide. She does not believe that he intended to cause his death. She writes, “I do not imagine he had any idea that his actions would result in the finality of death. I view his last compulsive act as an unpremeditated action that ultimately had a tragic ending.” It’s this belief that allows her to trust that her son, if he is not there already, will ultimately be united with God in heaven.

This book is not so much about Tim’s death as it is a celebration of his life. In many ways, it is the act of a grieving mother, struggling to make sense of all she has been through, and in doing so, striving to give hope to others. Montanaro wants all people, especially young people, to “value the life God has given them.”

Montanaro’s writing is beautiful and meditative and hers is a life filled with faith and trust in God, even in the darkest hour. The book is filled with family photographs of Tim and his older brothers which add to the narrative.

I recently read “Trusting God with St. Therese” by Connie Rossini. Rossini speaks of reading this book and how it helped her find meaning and peace after a friend had also lost his life to mental illness. It helped her trust that the devil doesn’t get the last word. Even if that one person was the only one who this book helped, “Diary of a Country Mother” would be a success. This is a touching, heart wrenching book about the value of life.
Cynthia Montanaro's story is such a compelling mix of joy and gratitude that there is hardly room for sorrow. Here, at last, is a memoir to lift our spirits straight to God, a memoir which inspires laughter and happy tears, a record of the miracles which turn bereavement into blessing.

I recommend this book on many counts For its fine writing, its abundance of well-placed and beautiful photos, its vivid portrayal of a year in the country...

But above all I recommend this book for one reason No one should miss the opportunity to meet Tim.

Tim Montanaro, the catalyst for his mother's reflections and the subject of her memories, has a knack for friendship, and while some readers might think they already have enough friends, Tim wouldn't agree. During his life on earth, his love and interest in people were contagious. Now, thanks to this wonderful diary, he's more accessible than ever.

I've read this book three times so far, and with each reading my view of life (and death and Life) widens. In the words of Malcolm Muggeridge (quoted on page 206), "Every happening, great or small, is a parable whereby God speaks to us, and the art of life is to get the message." My gratitude to Tim and his mom for helping me, through the words of their book, get the message.
