Cary Umhau had everything she'd ever wanted -- beautiful children, a healthy bank account, even, she'd been told, a ticket to heaven. Yet something felt desperately wrong.
Somewhere on the road to the American Dream, her happy Christian life had become a fireproof fortress — one that kept the world's pain at bay but left her all too safe from God's burning love.
And she learned that he would do anything to break her out. Including — it seemed — breaking her.
Burning Down the Fireproof Hotel is part memoir, part manifesto for the spacious life that's waiting for all of us beyond our private prisons.

Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. I've never seen what that transitional process actually looks like until I read Burning Down the Fireproof Hotel. What is a Fireproof Hotel? It's the carefully crafted life every human naturally tries to build. Beginning at birth we build our lives and, lacking an alternative blueprint, we often default to our human nature which says you find life by making yours better and better and better and in so doing adding layer after layer of veneer trying to keep the outside looking shiny and polished while keeping out anything which may influence or harm the inside. Whether you are a 300 pound tow truck driver or a Harvard educated astrophysicist, we each have some level of experience with building our own Fireproof Hotel.
Even though this book is about Cary's journey into and out of the hotel, make no mistake, this is your story and mine. You will find something of yourself somewhere in the book as every now and then, when you least expect it, one of its pages magically turns into a mirror and in that brief shining moment you are given the valuable opportunity to think about surrendering your key and checking out of your own carefully crafted Fireproof Hotel. This book is not something you read. It's something you experience . . . just like an effortless conversation with a close, wise friend at Starbucks. Except I didn't have to carry the conversation or even talk. I just sat there drinking in the warm and encouraging words flowing my way from someone who seemed to know more about me than I realized. The only thing missing was my venti caramel latte.
A Fireproof Hotel is just like religion. It's form without power, knowledge without experience. Fireproof Hotels have gravity. They seem attractive and safe Sadly many Christians get sucked into its vortex. They are easy to spot. You will know them by their fruit. Just like the Scribes and Pharisees of old, they are quick to throw scripture at warp speed and are unparalleled at making others keenly aware of what they are against all the while remaining unknowing prisoners of their own Fireproof Hotel. I wonder if these Christians will one day resemble an all too familiar Craigslist ad: 1990 Ski Boat for sale. Only 50 hours on the engine. Barely Used. Christians who stay comfortably inside their Fireproof Hotel may one day find themselves in heaven with a sign around their neck: 85 year old Christian. Barely Used.
Cary Umhau will not be one of those. Thankfully, she checked out of her Fireproof Hotel a while back and in so doing found life. She has a winsome and encouraging way of helping you see that you can do the same and perhaps even more important, why you would want to.
I am the better for it.

Burning Down the Fireproof Hotel An Invitation to the Beautiful Life edition by Cary Umhau Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
This book is a delight to read. It's a rarity to find such gifted writing these days. This book entices one to breathe deeper and love bigger.
Cary compels me in these pages to get all I can from life and to savor each moment. Thank you, Cary!
Written in the rapid fire style of the painted lines on the highway blurring into one cohesive ribbon of colorful devotion. Cary delivers a heartfelt & sincerely bold glimpse into a spiritual life on fire. In the words of the Talking Heads' David Bryne, God shook her up & gave her a "wild, wild life." In reading, one gets the honor to share in that delight with her & to accept the invitation to join in the dance.
..... If we keep the lid open.
Cary shares how she is keeping the lid open so God can keep pouring in more life and encourages us to do so too!
Cary Campbell Umhau has an enjoyable and readable style and her book is full of telling anecdotes. I very much related to her story of growing from a place of self-protection into a wider experience of God's love and God's messy, rich, unpredictable and beautiful world - so much so that I'm hoping that my small women's group from church can read and discuss it together. My only criticisms are that I wish I knew more about what helped form that inhibited person in the past so that the book might have had a more satisfying arc.
It's a brave thing to speak your voice and tell your story so publicly, especially when it doesn't always fit into our cookie cutter mold of what the "perfect life" looks like. Cary speaks boldly, with Jesus very much by her side, and encourages us to ask the hard questions to start living our lives to the fullest, with integrity. Her stories are beautiful, gritty, sad, sweet, and real, and provide the best kind of shake up to our own yearnings to live more deeply. And to dance and laugh while we do.
Honored to know Cary personally, but to have learned about her journey much more intimately through her written word.
Cary shares her story with humor and a level of candidness that is very refreshing! I appreciated and embraced how open and real Cary wrote about her experiences, perspectives, choices, pain, and her journey. A delightful read!
Move over Anne Lamott! This book reminded me of Lamott's books in that it is the story of a faith journey, written in real life vignettes. Cary is honest, funny, sweet, slightly quirky, and profound as she describes her discovery of how her life has been blessed when she dared to open her heart to the possibilities that God can offer. Only when she stepped out of the norms and into a place that might be uncomfortable at times was she able to find the "beautiful life" that is there, (and that has always been there), for all of us. After reading this in an afternoon, I felt that I had just had coffee with a fascinating friend. And for some strange reason, while I laughed and identified with much of the book, the tears came when I read the thought provoking questions at the end. I have just purchased five more copies to share with my church library and the volunteers at our food pantry. Thanks, Cary, for sharing your experiences in this book. I hope this is just the beginning!
